Welcome to CAMD Connections

Hello and welcome to CAMD Connections!

I’m Rachel Moo, the Assistant Dean of Diversity Engagement & Initiatives for the College of Arts, Media, and Design (CAMD) at Northeastern University. As concepts like diversity, equity, and inclusion become more common, their nuanced meanings can sometimes be overlooked or misunderstood. It's crucial to recognize that these terms carry significant weight and should be used thoughtfully.

Here’s how I define each term:

  • Diversity: The presence of differences within a setting, group, or organization.
  • Equity: Acknowledging that individuals have different needs and circumstances, and ensuring that everyone receives what they need to succeed.
  • Equality: Providing the same resources and opportunities to everyone, regardless of individual needs.
  • Inclusion: Creating environments where individuals feel welcomed, respected, supported, and valued, with a focus on fostering a sense of belonging.

Belonging is an essential, yet often under-discussed aspect:

  • Belonging: The feeling of being an integral and valued member of a group, characterized by a deep sense of connection, acceptance, and appreciation for one’s true self.

In line with our commitment to fostering a strong sense of belonging, we are launching the CAMD Connections community. Our goal is to help CAMD students build meaningful connections and find their place within our community.

We invite you to join the conversation and share what belonging means to you. We have set up a community whiteboard where you can contribute your thoughts and experiences.

Thank you for participating in this important dialogue. We look forward to your insights and contributions.
